Why use a career transition tool?

OpportuNext helps you quickly identify, and easily explore, your most promising career paths. It is designed to highlight options that are both viable because they require many of the skills and abilities you already have, and desirable because they offer positive employment growth prospects and will pay you similar or better wages. Learn more here.
Enter your current job title in the search bar. The predictive text feature will show you several job title options — select the one that best matches your interests and click enter. You can browse the list of top career options that appears.
Once you click "View details” on a career match, you will be taken to a job profile page. You can make this career a favourite by clicking the heart. The job profile is now saved to your "Favourites”, which you can access through the navigation button at the top of any page.
We do not store your data. Your favourites are saved through cookies. To remove your favourites, you can clear your web browser's cached cookies or you can go to your OppotuNext favourites page and click on "Clear favourites."
Top career options are shown based on their similarity scores. Similarity scores use a mathematical formula to compare level of skills, abilities, knowledge, work activities, tools, training, and education required for each occupation. The higher the similarity score, the closer the careers are to being a match.

We base 5- and 10-year growth prospects based on the projected employment levels in the most recent data from the The Model of Occupations, Skills and Technology (MOST). These growth rates are then translated into the ratings as follows:

  • Any negative numbers (0 or less) = "Very Poor"
  • Greater than 0% but less than or equal to 2% = "Poor"
  • Greater than 2% but less than or equal to 5% = "Fair"
  • Greater than 5% but less than or equal to 10% = "Good"
  • Greater than 10% = "Excellent"
The relative importance of over 4,000 characteristics for each occupation are based on data from O*NET and job posting data from Vicinity Jobs, these rankings are used to create a "characteristics profile" for each of 450 occupations featured on OpportuNext.
Data for occupation attributes like skills, abilities, knowledge, work activities, tools, training and education is sourced from O*NET and Vicinity Jobs databases. Salary information is sourced from Statistics Canada's Canadian Labour Force Survey (LFS). Employment growth prospects are based on data from the The Model of Occupations, Skills and Technology (MOST), and from an occupational forecast produced by Employment and Social Development Canada.
